When my oldest niece was five she was obsessed with The Little Mermaid and the Mary Martin black-and-white version of Peter Pan. She watched those VHS tapes over and over until they broke down and got all snowy and unwatchable.
When my twin nephews were five, they watched 101 Dalmatians many more than 101 times. Apparently, five-year olds find comfort in watching familiar movies because they know what’s coming and how it ends.
I think that I might be five years old in terms of my viewing habits. The main difference is that I tend to like tween girl romantic comedies rather than animated Disney fare. This week I’ve been obsessing about the movie Something Borrowed. I got it from Netflix this week and I’m watching it for the fourth time tonight. I like knowing how romantic comedies are going to end. I like knowing that a happy ending is on the way. I think that I’m going to have to buy a copy of this movie for my collection so that it can be in the company of Sex In the City, 13 Going on 30, The Devil Wears Prada, Love Actually, He’s Just Not That Into You, and The Switch.
I don’t own any movies without happy endings! And I like it that way!!!
