Nanny Returns—Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Krause
This sequel to the Nanny Diaries picks up ten years after the end of the first book. Nan Hutchinson is now married to Ryan, the Harvard hottie she met in the book one. After living abroad for a number of years, Nan and Harvard hottie have moved back to Manhattan where she is working to get a consulting business off the ground. Nan accepts a consulting contract at a chic independent school where circumstances demand that she compromise some of her personal values in order to meet her considerable economic needs.
The story really picks up when, late one evening, Nan meets up with Grayer, her former charge. Now sixteen and apparently deeply emotionally troubled, Nan finds her life once again intertwined with Grayer and his family—Mr. and Mrs. X and Grayer’s young brother, Stilton.
While I thoroughly enjoyed the Nanny Diaries, I found Nan’s character in the second book to be frustratingly spineless. Rather than empathize with Nan who, I suppose the reader is supposed to see as “lost,” I found myself wanting to throw the book across the room and while yelling at Nan to finally just getting around to growing up!
While Nanny Returns won’t make my top ten list of reads for the year, I do have to admit that if (or, more likely, when) a third books comes out, I’ll pick it up and give it a go as soon as I can get my hands on a copy.
