The True Meaning of Smekday – Adam Rex
Gratuity "Tip" Tucci writes an essay for school and the National Time Capsule Contest about what happened when the aliens invaded, and the other aliens invaded. It began one Christmas Eve when huge, bizarre spaceships carrying the Boov arrived to "discover" Earth. As the first civilization to discover Earth, the Boov claim the planet and rename it Smekland in honor of none other than the great Boov hero, Captain Smek. After five long months trying to live peacefully alongside the savages of Earth, it becomes clear to the Boov that the only viable alternative for all involved is to move all Americans to a reservation that the Boov set up–namely, the state of Florida. Gratuity finds her way to Florida only to find out that as Florida has an abundance of oranges which the Boov prize greatly, she must continue her journey into Arizona which the Boov have chosen as the reservation site instead.
A very entertaining YA read with a lot more subtext than you find in most books intended for YAs. A couple of my boys who've read it thought that it was "hilarious," but as I didn't get the chance to discuss it with them before the end of the school year, I don't know how much of the social commentary they actually picked up. A read that is well worth the time.
