I just finished up with Runner by Carl Deuker. It is a quite a good read in spite of what I considered to be a rather disappointing conclusion. High school senior, Chance Taylor, lives on a boat with his Gulf War veteran father. As Chance's father has his struggles with alcohol and with holding down steady work, Chance does his best to help his father make ends meet. One day, Chance is approached by a man who works at the marina where the Taylor's boat is moored. This new aquaintance proposes that Chance help him with delivery of packages of an unspecified nature. The money that the man offers is extremely good and since Chance really could use the cash, he begins a job the takes him into places and situations that he never dreamed could happen. Not my favorite read of all time, but Deuker writes very well and the book could have very strong appeal for boys.
