I just finished watching one of those movies that come out and disappear from theaters without much fanfare, but you discover on DVD because for some random reason you stuck it into your Neflix cue months ago. Based on a book by the same name, The Prize Winner of Defiance Ohio is one of those. Julianne Moore is great as the mother of a very large family that enters advertiser sponsored contests during the 1950s and 1960s in order to keep her family going and as a creative outlet for her very considerable talent. The similarities of the family dynamics that this family and my Chinese-American family in Honolulu experience are nothing less than mind blowing and extremely moving. The movie is beautifully written and acted and it made me realize how lucky I am to have a mom every bit as heroic as the movie's main character. Great stuff. Don't miss it! The book is definitely going on my "to read" list!
